They found that a person who engaged in vigorous exercise six times per week had the same diabetes risk as someone who spent at least six hours per week participating in moderate-intensity exercise. The researchers also found that the risk of diabetes was reduced even more as a person engaged in higher levels of intensity. They found a 27 percent lower risk of diabetes for people who spent six hours per week engaging in vigorous-intensity exercise. The results of the new study are consistent with previous research that has found similar reductions in diabetes risk with physical activity. The authors acknowledged that their analysis does not include data on diet, which can have a major impact on diabetes risk. Still, other studies have shown that eating a healthy diet can make physical activity less important for preventing diabetes. While diabetes can result from many different factors, there is a strong connection between a poor diet and diabetes, as well as the increased risk of obesity and weight gain. The National Institutes of Health says a healthy diet includes five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day, and two to four servings of whole grains.
